News Pandemic Hits On-Premise Chains
The pandemic has hit the hospitality business especially hard, with many independent, small “mom and pop” on-premise restaurants forcing to close permanently. But the COVID-19 crisis has also had a big impact on large restaurant chains, with many chains filing for bankruptcy protection.

News Hard Seltzer Now Accounts for 10% of All Beer Sales
The latest read on Nielsen data as described in Buzzfeed shows that hard seltzer now accounts for 10% of all beer sales. Three of the top five growth beer brands are in the hard seltzer category (White Claw Assorted, Truly Lemonade and Bud Light Seltzer).

News Coca Cola Will Enter the Hard Seltzer Category
The hard seltzer category was dominated by two brands during the first 24 months of its explosive growth. Others have jumped in as the growth shows no signs of slowing. Craft brewers have joined the partly as have all of the major-brand brewers. But you know its “a thing” when the non-alcoholic beverage behemoth Coca-Cola enters a category.

News Report Says Beer Industry Will Lose 651,000 Jobs By End of Year
The Beer Institute, the Brewers Association, the National Beer Wholesalers Association and the American Beverage Licensees released a report today from a leading economic firm showing more than 651,000 jobs supported by the U.S. beer industry will be lost by the end of the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These job losses include more than 3,600 brewing jobs, 1,800 distributing jobs and 400,000 retail-related jobs.

News Brewdog Loses Trademark Dispute with Elvis Presley Estate
It’s yet another example of how delicate naming a beer can be. Scottish and US brewer Brewdog has may need to stop using the name of one of their best-selling beers, a grapefruit and blood orange IPA called ‘Elvis Juice’ after losing a trademark appeal against Elvis Presley Enterprises (EPE), the company that manages the estate of the late singer.

News CDC Releases ‘Guiding Principles’ for Reopening Bars and Restaurants
As restaurants and bars resume operations in some areas of the United States, CDC has offered considerations for ways in which operators can protect employees, customers, and communities and slow the spread of COVID-19. Restaurants and bars can determine, in collaboration with state and local health officials, whether and how to implement these considerations, making adjustments to meet the needs and circumstances of the local community. Implementation should be guided by what is feasible, practical, acceptable, and tailored to the needs of each community. These considerations are meant to supplement—not replace—any state, local, territorial, or tribal health and safety laws, rules, and regulations with which businesses must comply.

News Maintaining Customer Satisfaction in the COVID-19 Era
Craft Brewing Business updates their series on customer service tips in the brewery tasting room to include new COVID-19 related procedures. Past editions featured primarily engagement and environment based on observations made while visiting breweries coast to coast. The updated feedback includes comments on everything from customer perception on sanitation/cleanliness to food safety to social distancing.

News NBWA Releases Beer Purchasers’ Index for August
The National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) has released the Beer Purchasers’ Index (BPI) for August 2020 as beer distributors continue to take an aggressive stance in their ordering to minimize out-of-stocks and compensate for lost draft beer volumes and on-premise closures. BPI is the only forward-looking indicator for distributors to measure expected beer demand. The index surveys beer distributors’ purchases across different segments and compares them to previous years. A reading greater than 50 indicates the segment is expanding, while a reading below 50 indicates the segment is contracting.

News The New Era of Online Alcohol Sales
It has been here for a while, lingering around the edges of alcohol sales for a number of years. But it took a pandemic and economic shut-down to push it front and center. Third party online alcohol sales are here to stay and will be just one of the radical shifts in the alcohol industry that we will see going forward after the COVID crisis.

News ‘Seal of Independence’ Gaining in Awareness
According to a recent blog post by Bart Watson, chief economist at the Brewers Association, 50% of craft consumers said they had seen the BA’s Seal of Independence, up from 42% last year. More importantly, 31% of craft drinkers and 42% of weekly craft drinkers said they had purchased beer with the seal on the packaging.
