News Garrett Oliver Helps Save Historic British Brewing System ‘Burton Unions’
Two brewers in the UK have agreed to save what is perhaps the last remaining Burton Unions fermentation set. Burton Unions have been used in brewing British-style ales for well over 150 years. It is an odd ‘set’ of wooden barrels that are tied together in ‘union’ to create a unique method of fermentation.

News AB InBev Reports Increase in Revenue Despite Sales Decline
Anheuser-Busch InBev reported an increase in global revenue of 2.6% in the first quarter of 2024, despite a dramatic decline in sales in the U.S. Revenue in the U.S. market fell 9.1% in the first quarter and sales to U.S. retailers dropped 13.7%.

News Domestic Beer Shipments Down 13.6% in March According to Beer Institute Estimates
After two months of positive shipments by domestic brewers, March took a hearty plunge downward with total shipments down by 13.6% versus March of last year. That drop puts total shipments down by 1.8% for year-to-date through March.

News Greene King to Close Historic 200 Year Old Westgate Brewery and Move to New Modern Facility
Greene King will be moving out of its historic Westgate Brewery in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk to a new site in the same town. The British brewer has brewed beers such as Old Speckled Hen and Abbot Ale at the Westgate Brewery for over 200 years.

News Boston Beer Shipments Up 0.9% in First Quarter Due to Twisted Tea Growth
Given the state of the industry, Boston Beer has kicked off 2024 with some pretty good numbers, reporting that shipments increased by 0.9% in the first quarter of 2024 versus the same period last year. According to the company, the nearly one percent growth was due primarily to growth in Twisted Tea, offset by declines in Truly Hard Seltzer and the other Boston Beer brands.

News 2024 World Beer Cup Winners Announced
There may have been some personal equity left at the tables and slot machines during the Craft Brewers Conference this year in Las Vegas, but the Brewers Association handed out plenty of precious metals in the form of gold, silver and bronze during the World Beer Cup Awards Ceremony.

News Craft Beer Marketing Awards Announce 2024 Winners
The 2024 Craft Beer Marketing Awards (CBMAs) winners were announced recently in an online streamed ceremony. A total of 227 awards were presented in over 20 categories including seltzer, ready-to-drink cocktails, non-alcoholic beer, cider/mead and beer.

News Seattle Sisters Now Under Same Roof – Pike Brewing Owner Buys Fremont
Seattle Hospitality Group (SHG), which owns the pioneering Pike Brewing, has acquired a controlling interest in Seattle’s Fremont Brewing. Freemont Brewing is the third-largest brewery in Washington State, producing over 50,000 barrels of beer in 2022.

News BA Releases Craft Beer Production Numbers for 2023 – Production Down 1%
The Brewers Association (BA) released their annual production figures today for the U.S. craft brewing industry. Independently owned craft breweries had a production decline in 2023 of 1.0%. The number of operating craft breweries continued to climb in 2023, reaching an all-time high of 9,683.

News Craft and Corona Icon – Gambrinus Founder Carlos Alvarez Dies at 73
Carlos Alvarez, founder of the Gambrinus Company and credited with bringing Modelo and Corona to the U.S. and also taking on craft brands such as Bridgeport Brewing, Pete’s Brewing and Trumer Pils has passed away. He was 73.

News BI and NBWA Beer Metrics Show Optimistic Signs for Year-to-Date
The Beer Institute has released their estimate of domestic tax paid shipments by beer brewers for February 2024 which shows shipments of 11,900,000 barrels for the month, an encouraging increase of 7.9% compared to February 2023 removals of 11,024,243. It follows an increase of 1.8% in January, which indicates that the huge declines of last year may be leveling off.

News Three Big Brewers Drop 1 Million Barrels of Craft Sales in 2023
Three global brewers with “craft” brand ownership lost a combined 1 million barrels in sales in 2023 according to estimates from Beer Marketer’s Insights. Meanwhile, Constellation sold off their remaining craft brands, in a growing trend of Big Beer losing interest in the US craft beer segment.

News Kendall-Jackson Becomes First NBA Wine Partner
