News Merger Mania Continues – River Horse Buys DuClaw
DuClaw Brewing Company, the 25-year-old Maryland brewery that is distributed in 21 states has been acquired by River Horse Brewing Company in Ewing, NJ. It is the third acquisition or merger in the craft brewing industry in the last few weeks.

News Bud Light Boycott Continues as Craft Beer Industry Watches
In a truly stunning and unprecedented consumer boycott in the alcohol beverage industry, sales of Bud Light have continued to decline with over $15 billion being wiped off the value of ABInBev since the controversy over the Dylan Mulvaney endorsement began. Whether or not a boycott like this could ever invade the spirit and culture of craft beer is unlikely, but still unknown.

News Brewers Association Releases 2023 Beer Style Guidelines
The Brewers Association has released its Beer Style Guidelines for 2023, with two major being made; West Coast-Style India Pale Ale and Dessert or Pastry Stout. The additions of both styles represent significant changes in commercially available beers in the United States.

A months-old Miller Lite commercial featuring actress Ilana Glazer criticizing the sexist history of beer advertising has come under fire on social media channels by those who claim the ad is “woke” and calling for a boycott.

News Ireland Becomes First Country to Require Health Information on Alcohol Labels
Proposals to add additional warnings and health information on alcoholic beverages has long been discussed by policymakers in the US and other countries, but no action has ever been taken. Ireland has now just become the first country in the world to require all alcohol labels to list calorie content and health risk information for consumers.

News Wait, What? Original Owners of Appalachian Mountain Buy Brewery Back from ABInBev
There have been many twists and turns in the history of the craft brewing movement. Without a doubt, one of the most pivotal points along the 40-plus year timeline was when the large global breweries began buying up independent craft breweries in earnest in the early 2010’s. Those of us in the industry wondered where it would lead. Today, maybe we have a hint; the original owners of a brewery that was acquired by ABInBev announced that they have bought the brewery back. Beginning of a trend?

News Drizly Survey Finds Less People Going Out to Drink Due to Inflation
The fifth annual nationwide survey from Drizly uncovers that inflation is prompting a return to entertaining at home with fewer people going out to on-premise locations to drink. One-in-four respondents said they will opt to drink at home more often in 2023 than at bars and restaurants.

News Asahi Attributes Strong First Quarter Growth to Success of Non-Alcohol Launch and Price Adjustments
Japan’s Asahi Group saw a significant increase in total revenue during its first quarter with a 7.9% year on year increase, driven largely through what the company attributed to price revisions and premiumization. The company also pointed towards the successful launch of alcohol-free beer Asahi Super Dry 0.0%, which has contributed to the growth of the Asahi Super Dry brand.

News Austrian Trappist Brewery Abbey of Engelszell to Close
Trappist Ale beer production will come to an end in Austria as the last four monks staying at the abbey of Engelszell will soon leave the premises. The Trappist brewery is the only one in Austria and the closure will leave just nine Trappist breweries remaining in the world.

News ProBrewer and Others Raise $255,000 for Michael Jackson Foundation
For the second year in a row, ProBrewer teamed up with Athletic Brewing to raise money for the Michael James Jackson Foundation (MJF). The effort raised more than $255,000 this year thanks to a matching $100,000 grant from Athletic Brewing and major donations from Firestone Walker, Sierra Nevada, Sam & Mariah Calgione/Boston Beer, Other Half, New Glarus and others as well as allied trade members such as Briess, Haas, Rahr and Yakima Chief.

Today kicks off the week-long American Craft Beer Week, the annual “cheers to craft beer” celebration organized by the Brewers Association. ACBW, which runs today through May 21st, is intended to celebrate the history of indie beer, and promote independently-owned craft breweries across the country.

News World Beer Cup Winners Announced
The Brewers Association handed out awards to 307 winners during the 2023 World Beer Cup (WBC) awards ceremony yesterday as the annual Craft Brewers Conference concluded in Nashville, TN. There were 10,213 entries submitted from 2,376 breweries from 51 countries.

News Oregon Settles Lawsuit – Allows Out-of-State Breweries to Self-Distribute and Ship DTC
The state of Oregon and the Oregon Liquor & Cannabis Commission has quickly settled a lawsuit brought by Washington breweries. The settlement will allow out-of-state breweries to self-distribute and ship beer directly to consumers in Oregon, a big win for adjoining Washington craft brewers.

News Constellation Sells Two Breweries Back to Original Owners – Will Exit Craft Beer Biz

In the second, and third such event in just a few weeks, the founders of two craft breweries are reacquiring the brewery back from a global brewer. The founders of Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park, FL and Four Corners Brewing Co. in Dallas, TX are buying back the company they founded from Constellation Brands.
