News Ireland Becomes First Country to Require Health Information on Alcohol Labels

Proposals to add additional warnings and health information on alcoholic beverages has long been discussed by policymakers in the US and other countries, but no action has ever been taken. Ireland has now just become the first country in the world to require all alcohol labels to list calorie content and health risk information for consumers.

The new law will allow for a three year “use up” period and takes effect May 22, 2026. It will require the grams of alcohol, the calorie content for each product and any associated health risks such as the risk of liver disease or cancers be listed on the container label.

All alcoholic beverage manufacturers and importers will be required to display the information and warnings on product packaging and also to direct consumers to the website of Ireland’s Health Service Executive for further information on alcohol consumption. Pubs and other licensed retailers will be required to display similar information.
