Farmers planted 2.80 million acres of barley for the 2020 crop year, up 3 percent from the previous year. Nationwide, 97 percent of the barley acreage was sown by June 7th with 75 percent of the barley acreage being reported in good to excellent condition.

Expert Topic Hop Growers Pull-Back Due to Reduced Demand
Hop growers had predicted moderate growth in the hop harvest and in sales this year but have now pulled back their estimates to flat over 2019 because of the drop in beer sales during the pandemic and the expected slow return to normal in the on-premise business.

News Hong Kong Brewery Brews up CBD Beer
The use of CBD in any food or drink product, including alcohol, is illegal in the U.S. And even though the potential health benefits of CBD are getting more recognition these days, in most Asian countries it is still seen as a drug and somewhat taboo. But it is legal. And a new start-up, is not brewing and marketing a CBD-infused beer.

Expert Topic New Process Converts Spent Grain into High-Value Carbon
As reported in Anthropocene magazine, a study in the Journal of Chemical Technology and Biotechnology has shown that brewer’s grain can be converted into two forms of carbon using readily available and inexpensive chemicals combined with heat. Both carbon compound have many high-value applications.

News K-Cup Cocktails? Say it Ain’t So!
Keurig Dr Pepper has partnered with Anheuser-Busch InBev to market an automated home bar system that makes cocktails using K-cup type pods similar to home coffee machines. But instead of a wake-you-up caffeine drink, the machine will quick-produce a wide variety of alcoholic mixed drinks.
