News Consumer Group Says Vizzy Illegally Touting Health Claims with Addition of Vitamin C
The TTB has long prohibited any sort of health claim on alcohol packaging or advertising. The Center for Science in the Public Interest and Consumer Federation of America have submitted a letter to the Food and Drug Administration requesting that they bring enforcement action against Molson Coors for illegally misleading consumers with its Vizzy Hard Seltzer labeling and advertising campaign.

News Craft Maltsters Guild Announces 2021 Malt Cup Award Winners
2021 was the first time the Craft Maltsters Guild has hosted their annual conference virtually, and the first year the guild opened up the awards competition to international malthouses. 28 malthouses from seven countries, 17 states, and one province submitted a total of 46 entries spanned 29 different malt barley varieties.

News Merger of the Kegs: MicroStar Buys KegStar
MicroStar Logistics, the largest independent owner of beer kegs in the world, announced that it has acquired the keg rental company Kegstar. The acquisition will grow Denver-based MicroStar’s international business by taking on Kegstar’s clients which include breweries in Australia, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the U.S.

News US Hop Production Down in 2020
Production for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in 2020 totaled 104 million pounds, down 7% from the 2019 crop of 112 million pounds, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). The report also said that the 2020 value of production for the United States totaled $619 million, down 3% from the previous year.

News Oregon Issues New Guidance for Hard Seltzer
Hard seltzers are prompting some states to reevaluate where the product “fits in” to the regulatory structure given that seltzers are neither malt based or fruit based. Recently, Oregon issued clarification pertaining to the classification of hard seltzers in the state. The guidance impacts the majority of hard seltzers in the market, most notably on excise tax and licensing needed to produce or sell hard seltzers in the state.

News Can Manufacturers Institute Offers Grants for Can Recycling
The Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI) will make grants available in 2021 to Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) for aluminum can capture equipment, which will ensure used beverage cans (UBC) are accurately sorted, sold and recycled. Capturing and recycling aluminum cans provides a positive environmental and economic impact as metal recycles forever and UBCs are typically made into new cans, according to the CMI press release.
