News Coopers Hall Winery First in Country to Package in Reusable Bottles
Coopers Hall Winery, already known for being the first “keg-only winery in Oregon”, has now broken another barrier by packaging its wine in reusable brown bottles standard in the beer industry. Coopers Hall thought, why not use them for wine? Limiting waste has always been one of its priorities. “We’re trying to break that cycle of waste,” said wine curator Joel Gunderson.

News Traces of Weed Killer Found in Several Beer and Wine Brands
Traces of a herbicide commonly used in weed killer have been detected in several leading beer and wine brands, including Coors Light, Budweiser and Beringer, according to a report published by public-interest advocacy group US PIRG.

News French Company Buys Seattle Brewer & Cidery
Cider Company and Two Beers, a jointly-owned and operated Seattle craft brewery and cidery announced that they have sold to a French cooperative called Agrial. The sale is intended to provide the two companies with the capital for expansion.

News Beer Industry Economic Impact Double that of Wine
According to a new study released by the Beer Institute and the National Beer Wholesalers Association, the U.S. beer industry contributed a staggering $252.6 billion to the economy last year; more than twice the impact of the wine industry.
The study also concluded that the industry (which includes brewers, wholesalers, retailers, suppliers and induced industries) is responsible for wages of $78.6 billion nationwide.

News Meeting of the Meads
The word “honeymoon” stems from honey wine and the tradition of drinking it for one full lunar cycle starting on the first night of a couples’ wedding. This ‘drink of love’ will be celebrated at the fourth annual International Mead Festival — Honey Wines of the World, to be held in Boulder on February 10-11, 2006. ().

News Oregon Proposal Would Increase Tax on Beer, Cider and Wine.

The Oregon Health Authority is proposing a tax increase on beer, wine and cider that would generate $293 million in new revenue during the 2021-23 biennium. The hike would translate to an additional tax of 7 cents per 12-ounce serving of beer or cider and about 23 cents on a five-ounce serving of wine. The current tax is 0.8 cents for 12 ounces of beer or cider and 2.5 cents for five ounces of wine.
