News Founders Sells Majority Share to Mahou
Founders Brewing Co., Michigan’s largest brewery, Founders Brewing Co. as announced that it will sell majority ownership to its Spanish brewing partner, Mahou San Miguel Group. Mahou, which previously purchased a 30% stake in the company in 2014 will now own 90%.

Spain’s beer industry body, Cerveceros de Espana, says the economic slowdown resulting from a no-deal Brexit would have a “big impact” on sales.
Cerveceros de Espana’s report on nationwide beer sales found that, although consumption has rebounded in the last year, recent global economic slowdown could threaten the country’s brewery businesses.

News UK – CAMRA bans discriminatory labels at beer festival
Beers with “discriminatory names or artwork” have been banned at CAMRA’s flagship event, the Great British Beer Festival, taking place this week in London. All of the festival’s beers, ciders and perries have been checked to ensure they meet CAMRA’s charter and code of conduct. The festival chose Stonewall as this years charity of choice and will be contributing proceeds in support. The announcement is a result of high profile figures in the UK’s beer industry putting pressure on lobbying bodies like CAMRA to act on sexism in the trade.

News German Brewer Plans Large Brewery in NC
The German brewing company Gilde, based in Hannover, Germany is planning a large, 500,000 bbl brewery in Charlotte, North Carolina. The brewery, which has been in business in Germany since 1546 is planning on introducing the German-style beer in phases, beginning with importing the brand from Germany this summer.

News Nick Warming, Boss at Southern Bay Brewery in Australia Resigns after Non-Alcoholic Beer ‘Gay Lemonade’ Comment Backlash
Nick Warming, the boss at Southern Bay Brewery, has been forced to resign after he joked that non-alcoholic beer should be called ‘gay lemonade.’ Warming, CEO received angry backlash on social media to a post he had shared on the firm’s Facebook page.
The post, a meme of an old boxer with the caption: “Non-alcoholic beer. You mean gay lemonade?”
In response to criticism, the now former boss of the Australian company said: “I have resigned as CEO of Southern Bay Brewing Co. The board have accepted my resignation with immediate effect.”

News Industry Faces Swings in Trade War
President Donald Trump lifted steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada and Mexico on Friday which will provide some relief to the beverage industry. The Beer Institute has estimated that 43% of aluminum used by beverage companies in the U.S. comes from Canada.

UK advertising watchdogs plan to clamp down on alcohol brands that promote their brands to young consumers with the suggestion they will be happier, more confident, or successful, marketing experts warn. According to the ASA, claiming that alcohol has therapeutic qualities or is the answer to overcoming boredom and loneliness or other problems “pretty much always breaks the rules”.

News Budweiser teams up with Tilray to explore pot drinks
The maker of Budweiser is partnering with medical cannabis company Tilray in a $100 million deal to research cannabis-infused drinks for the Canadian market. The alliance announced Wednesday is the latest foray by a major beer company into the cannabis business in Canada, which legalized recreational marijuana in October.
