News BA to Hold Hopsource in Yakima for Its Fifth Year
Brewers Association (BA) staff will conduct the Hopsource hop sensory assessment in Yakima, Washington again in 2022. Brewers and industry members visiting Yakima for hop selection will have the opportunity to evaluate over 20 varieties of hops that are being considered for advancement in the BA-funded United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Public Hop Breeding Program.

News 2022 Hop Yield May Be Down by 20% in Germany – Average Yield Expected in US
The global hop company BarthHaas has said in its August report that its German hop crop is estimated to be down by as much as 20% vs. 2021. The early maturing varieties such as Hallertau Mittelfrüh, Northern Brewer, Traditional and Perle) have been affected the most.

News Larry Bell to Open Beer Memorabilia Museum Along with Collection of History Books & Jazz Artifacts
Larry Bell, craft beer pioneer who founded Bell’s Brewery in 1985, is set to convert a warehouse he currently owns in Kalamazoo, Michigan to become a display hall for his collection of brewery industry memorabilia.

News Maui Brewing and Modern Times to Operate Under New Entity of Craft ‘Ohana
With the Modern Times acquisition by Maui Brewing Co. expected to close in late October, the company has announced that new parent company will be called Craft ‘Ohana (Ohana being the Hawaiian name for ‘family’).

News BA Now Accepting Seminar Proposals for CBC 2023
The Brewers Association is now accepting seminar proposals for the 2023 Craft Brewers Conference which will take place in Nashville, Tennessee May 7-10. The submission period will close on September 30, 2022. Selected seminars will be notified in November 2022.

News UK Adds 200 New Breweries in Last Year – Total Now at 2,246
New brewery opening in the UK have continued even during the pandemic with 200 new brewery openings in the last 12 months ending March 31st. The tally racks up a 9.1% growth in operating breweries with a current total of 2,426.

News CO2 Shortage Continues to Bubble
The CO2 shortage is nothing new in the industry having first bubbled up in 2020. But a new contamination at the Jackson Dome, which is owned by independent energy company Denbury, is tightening supplies even further. The Jackson Dome is Denbury’s primary source of CO2 for the Gulf Coast region.

News Washington Brewers Sue Oregon to Allow DTC and Self-Distribution in High Stakes Case
In what could be a pivotal and landmark court case, three brewers in Washington state have filed a lawsuit against the state of Oregon seeking to ship beer directly to consumers (DTC) and self-distribute to retailers in Oregon.

News Boston Beer Announces Tough Second Quarter as Hard Seltzer Declines
Boston Beer has again cut its earnings forecast as demand for its once hot hard seltzer Truly continued to decline along with the category as a whole. Hard seltzer dollar sales declined by 13% in the second quarter of 2022 (in measured off-premise channels).
