Rogue, Fish shine in England

Beverage Industry News» Beverage Industry Newsposted May 5th, 2004 12:00:00AM by Pat Hagerman

Seven American breweries are among those celebrating success in England’s bi-annual Brewing Industry International Awards. Judges picked finalists in eight categories (23 classes) during judging March 26 in Burton and April 22 in London, but the actual medal positions won’t be revealed until the awards ceremony May 25 at Guildhall in London.

A BIIA medal is one of the brewing industry’s most coveted honors. Competition at this year’s event was fierce, with 822 beers competing for 69 medals and eight champion beer trophies. Entries came from breweries in 48 countries.

The awards date back to the 19th century and are among the most prestigious in the world.

Two American breweries won twice – Rogue Ales (Oregon) for American Amber and Shakespere Stout, and Fish Brewing (Washington) for Organic India Pale Ale and Organic Amber Ale.

Also honored are New Glarus Brewing (Wisconsin) for Raspberry Tart, Alaskan Brewing (Alaska) for Alaskan Smoked Porter, Boston Beer Co. for Sam Adams Chocolate Bock, BridgePort Brewing (Oregon) for BridgePort IPA, and Sierra Nevada Brewing (California) for Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

Scottish Courage, which brews at multiple locations, captured four medals. Two British brewers grabbed three medals – Young & Co. from London and Charles Wells Ltd.
