News Washington Bill to Lower DUI Threshold Fizzles at the State Capitol

A bill in the Washington state legislature to lower the intoxicated driving threshold from the federal standard of 0.08 to 0.05 has failed to meet a critical committee hearing deadline meaning the bill will not be able to move forward this session.

Senate Bill 52002 was being closely watched by the alcohol and hospitality industries. Utah is currently the only state in the country with a 0.05 threshold for driving under the influence, but advocates for the stricter limit have attempted to pass laws in numerous other states.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee was said to support the bill which would have reduced the breath or blood alcohol concentration limit for operating a vehicle to 0.05. This includes driving under the influence of liquor, cannabis or any other drug.

It is likely that additional proposals will continue to pop up in state houses across the country.
