News NBWA June ‘Beer Purchasers’ Index’ Indicates Craft Beer Still Declining

The just released National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) Beer Purchasers’ Index (BPI) for June 2023 shows that the BPI for all beer categories rose above the benchmark (50) to 54, but remains below the nine-year average of 60. The craft beer index at 38 continues to signal contraction but is slightly above the June 2022 reading of 33. This indicates the beer market is still soft, with continuing declines in the craft segment.

The cider segment posted the lowest BPI with a reading at 28 compared to 30 in June 2022. FMB’s and seltzers were the second lowest with a reading of 31 in June, lower than the June 2022 reading of 36.

The index for imports continues to point to expanding volumes with a reading of 68, seven points higher than the June 2022 reading of 61. The premium lights index posted a reading of 52, significantly higher than the June 2022 reading of 44 and the premium regular segment index at 53 is also significantly above the June 2022 reading of 36.
