News NBWA October ‘Beer Purchasers’ Index’ is Good News for Beer – But Not for Craft

The National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) released the Beer Purchasers’ Index (BPI) for October 2023, which shows increased ordering trends for six out of seven segments. The craft index for October continues to signal contraction, but it is stronger relative to the October last year.

The craft segment came in at an index reading of 31 for this October compared to an index of 23 last October.

An index of 50 or above indicates the segment is expanding while an index of less than 50 indicates that segment is slowing. The index surveys beer distributors’ purchases across different segments and compares them to previous years.

Imports showed the greatest potential for growth in October 2023 with a reading of 67, higher than October 2022 reading of 59.

Only the FMB/seltzer segment came in worse than craft with a reading for October 2023 at 28 compared to 18 for October 2022.

The cider segment posted a October reading at 35 compared to 30 for October 2022.
