News Untappd Buys BeerAdvocate

Next Glass, the ownership group of the beer rating app Untappd and software supplier to beer enthusiasts, breweries, bars and restaurants, announced today that it has acquired assets of BeerAdvocate.

BeerAdvocate, the popular beer rating website was founded by Todd Alstrom  with his brother Jason in 1996. They expanded into print by publishing the BeerAdvocate magazine, which may have stressed the company as the print medium continues to decline. In a BeerAdvocate post, Todd stated that “a large portion of our business relied on revenue from BeerAdvocate magazine. As the focus of readers and advertisers shifted over recent years, our publication wasn’t immune to the issues that have impacted the entire print media industry.”

It was also noted in the post that BeerAdvocate will maintain its brand identity, and continue as its own community, website and series of events.

“We’ve been struggling to keep the lights on for over two years, and we still face some challenges, but I’m confident that this is the best path for all of us,” said Alstrom. “Next Glass is committed to not only helping BeerAdvocate, but passionate about protecting and cultivating our unique culture, identity, and community.”

Untapped was founded in 2010 and is strictly app-based.
