News Constellation Finds New Location to Build Brewery After Water Dispute Shuts Down Mexicali Location
Constellation Brands said this week it will now build a new brewery in Veracruz, Mexico after a dispute over water access prompted it to halt construction last year of its largely completed brewery in the arid, northern border city of Mexicali.

News ABInBev Ends Foray into At-Home Cocktails with Closure of Drinkworks
The Drinks Business has reported that the joint project between Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. and Anheuser-Busch InBev, will stop selling its countertop at-home cocktail-making machines, and will refund customers who have already bought the appliance, the company said in a statement in December.

News Another Casualty in ‘Big Beer Buys Craft Beer’ – Molson Coors to Shut Saint Archer
Molson Coors today announced that it will cease operations of the Saint Archer brewery and remove Saint Archer brands from the retail marketplace. The company plans to sell its San Diego brewery and taproom to Kings & Convicts Brewing Company.

News Spirits Industry Goes After Beer Market Share in Effort to Lower Taxes on Canned Cocktails

News Violation of Franchise Laws Costs Jägermeister $12 Million
Have you ever wondered what the penalty might be if a alcohol beverage manufacturer lost a court case against a wholesaler in a franchise dispute? It doesn’t happen often that franchise disputes go before a jury, but in Missouri court case, the cost was high. Jägermeister was been found guilty of violating a contract with their distributor Major Brands Inc, with a jury awarding nearly $12 million in damages to Major Brands.

News Constellation’s Second Quarter Earnings Miss Mark but Beer Brands Do Well
Constellation Brands said adjusted earnings for the three months ended in August, the group’s fiscal second quarter, were pegged at $2.38 per share, down 13.8% from the same period last year and well shy of the Street consensus forecast of $2.77 per share. Group revenues, Constellation said, fell 5% to $2.371 billion, a figure that topped analysts’ estimates of a $2.302 billion tally.

News Heineken to Invest $52 Million in Neighborhood Pubs Across UK
Heineken will pump around $52 million into its Star and Garter pubs estate in the UK to upgrade about 80 of its pubs. Each pub will receive between $171,000 to $550,000 to make the pubs more comfortable and stylish inside as well as improving beer gardens. Better quality food will also be introduced – which is expected to account for around 30% of sales – as well as good coffee and premium spirits, wines, lagers and ciders.

News What’s In a Name – Trademark Suits Swirl Around Canopy
During the burgeoning growth spurt of the last 10 years there have been numerous lawsuits in the craft brewing industry over beer names. That seems to have calmed down, but bigger stakes abound in the industry. Canopy Growth, the Canadian cannabis company, is being sued by Remy Cointreau at the same time as Canopy’s biggest shareholder, Constellation Brands, is in a fight with Anheuser Busch InBev over the right to use the Corona brand name in the alcoholic flavored water sector.
