News On-Premise Shows Slight Decline Due to Latest Virus Surge
According to Nielsen CGA’s latest Impact Report, 50% of consumers have gone out to the on-premise to eat in the past 2 weeks, slightly down from 54% in the November survey. The report attributes the decline to tighter restrictions across a number of states.

News Adherence to COVID-19 Protocol Drives Brewery To-Go Sales
In a survey conducted by Craft Brewing Business, craft beer consumers purchasing beer to-go from local breweries listed “adherence to COVID-19 protocols such as cleaning, sanitation and social distancing” as a key factor in determining which brewery they buy from.

News Global Alcohol Expected to Decline by 8% in 2020
According to IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, alcohol beverage will be down by 8% versus 2019 across 19 global markets due to the worldwide pandemic. The U.S. and Canada are bright spots with each expected to show volume growth this year of over 2% total.

News Oregon Brewers Volume Down by 28%
It’s hard to get a good number on exactly where beer sales are in this pandemic year. But in “reporting states” such as Oregon, a clearer picture is coming into view. Sales volumes reported to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission by breweries are down about 28% from last year, and the number of breweries reporting has dropped by 25, a nearly 10% decline.

News Are Pubs ‘Safer’ Than Supermarkets in the UK?
An article in the Drinks Business says that data released by Public Health England (PHE) last week, based on information from the NHS Test and Trace app, supermarkets, not pubs, are the most common places visited in the days before a positive coronavirus test.

News Beverage Alcohol in 2020 Performs ‘Better than Expected’
Although alcoholic beverages have performed “better than expected” on a global basis, according to a report by IWSR, total wine and beer are both forecasted to be down about -9% in 2020 and are each unlikely to regain volumes for several years. Low-and-no alcohol beer, however, is a “bright spot for the category, as moderation and wellness trends continue to resonate with consumers,” according to the report.

News Restaurants and Bars Facing New Shutdown Orders Across the Country
Multiple cities and states are imposing or threatening to impose new shutdown orders for restaurants and bars due to a nationwide uptick in Coronavirus cases. The closures and additional restrictions will mean that beer sales are likely to slump once again in the on-premise retail sector.

News What Brewers Need to Know to Take Advantage of E-Commerce
The pandemic has turned the beer industry upside down, closing off or limiting most on-premise retail accounts and placing severe limitations on brewery tasting rooms. Thankfully, the off-premise has helped, but many craft brewers don’t have access to the grocery store sets. And that is why more and more craft brewers are turning to e-commerce direct-to-consumer (DTC).

News New COVID Lockdowns in UK Restrict Takeaway Sales for Pubs and Breweries
New lockdown orders in the UK, imposed due to a surge in COVID-19 cases, are even more harsh than in the past for pubs and breweries. Pubs could sell takeaway beer alongside takeaway meals before, but not this time.

News On-Premise Business Takes a Slight Dip in October
Nielsen CGA, which measure the on-premise retail channel, released data for the one-week period ending October 17th showing that dollar sales were down 7% for the week. The five states where data is collected include California, Texas, Illinois, New York and Florida. Only New York showed an increase with a 3% growth in dollar sales versus the previous week.

News Popular Beer Releases Take on New Format
Remember the long lines that some brewers generated during highly coveted beer releases (think Russian River’s Pliny the Younger release every February). Not gonna happen for awhile as brewers rethink new ways to release specialty beers without the onsite parties, lines and crowds.

News On-Premise Continues Slow Upward Growth
Nielson CGA’s most recent data on the on-premise business in eight key states show that average dollar sales (velocity) were slightly up, with a +4% change during the week ending October 10th versus the previous week. The increase is a sign that the on-premise business sector is improving as more regions slowly reduce restrictions on business due to COVID-19.
