News Some States Reopening On-Premise in Time for Memorial Day
The summer kick-off Memorial Day holiday is here, and leading up to one of the biggest beer sales weekends of the year, more and more states have allowed some on-premise hospitality businesses to reopen. Although most states have capacity and physical distancing requirements in place, even a partial reopening will be a boost to on-premise sales which have been almost non-existent since mid-March.

News Colorado Brewers Guild and Left Hand Brewing announce “Colorado Strong Fund”
Colorado Brewers Guild and Left Hand Brewing have announced a local take on the All Together beer collaboration — the “Colorado Strong Pale Ale.” It’s a beer to support Colorado craft breweries, suppliers while raising funds for healthcare, hospitality, service industry, and gig economy workers across Colorado.

News Slow Opening Begins, But Survivability is Unknown
The hospitality business has been hit so hard by the pandemic that a quarter of restaurants in America may go out of business according to an article in The Drinks Business. Given that the “long-tail” of craft breweries in the country rely on the on-premise tap room sales, the predictions could portent a drop-off of similar proportions in the brewing industry.

News Slow Start to On-Premise Likely When Reopen Begins
A survey of 1,000 consumers conducted by Datassential found that only 20% of consumers will “absolutely dine in right away” when restaurants reopen, with 39% considering and 41% saying “no way.” That is a common theme being painted by multiple surveys including a survey by Monday Night Brewing Co. that said 75% of craft beer consumers would be unlikely to visit a brewery in the month of June.

Craft breweries should prepare for smaller crowds in their taprooms even after social distancing and retail restrictions are lifted. News American Craft Beer Week Coming May 11-17, Focuses on Supporting Craft in Crisis
The annual American Beer Week is running May 11-17, 2020 — this year it turns to helping craft breweries with a focus on support during crisis. Consumer action items like gifting craft brewery merchandise and gift cards and social sharing of support messages directly tuned to support craft breweries during this crisis. Also included is a $1,000,000 GoFundMe campaign to directly support craft breweries, the Believe in Beer Craft Brewery Relief Fund.

News After Reopening Taprooms Shouldn’t Expect a Rush of Returning Customers Immediately
Atlanta’s Monday Night Brewing did a survey of recent customers to gauge when they through they would return to taprooms. Especially interesting since breweries in Georgia are now allowed to be open, with many restrictions in place.

News BA’s Bart Watson Industry Review
Absent the stage of the cancelled Craft Brewers Conference, Bart Watson took to the webinar screen to deliver his annual review of the craft beer market. Bart, economist for the Brewers Association (BA), covered 2019 with the caveat that this is where the industry “was,” and that last year’s craft beer industry has been forever changed by the coronavirus epidemic.

News BA-Defined Craft Brewers Post 4% Volume Gain in 2019
Volume growth for craft breweries as defined by the Brewers Association (BA) was 4% in 2019. The mid-single digit growth was on par with volume growth in 2018, showing a slow but steady increase in sales for craft beer over the last two years, compared to overall beer volume which declined 2% last year.

News A Peek on How Brewery Tap Rooms May Reopen
California Governor Gavin Newson laid out a rough sketch on how he will direct businesses to operate once the state begins to reopen as COVID-19 cases decrease. The Governor said that restaurants (and presumably bars and brewery tap rooms) will have to follow strict precautionary measures in their serving areas. This may be a peek at what a reopening will look like across much of the US.

The Craft Beer Professionals Virtual Conference was announced recently to help fill the void left by the CBC cancellation due to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis. An off-shoot of the Craft Beer Professionals Facebook group, the online conference will bring three days of talks that can be watched live April 20-22nd, or viewed online at a later date.

News Gordon Biersch Restaurant and Rock Bottom Chain Announce Mass Layoffs
CraftWorks Holdings, which owns the Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant chain, Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery chain and Logan’s Roadhouse has permanently laid off nearly all of its 18,000 employees and closed its 261 restaurants in response to stay-at-home orders issued in most states due to the coronavirus.

News Brewpub Lifeline –Take Out Service
As more states issue shelter-in-place orders due to the COVID crisis, breweries with a kitchen and food service have found a lifeline; providing food to go orders. It can be enough to keep some employees working and enough revenue coming in to pay for some of the fixed costs such as rent, insurance and other expenses that don’t go away when a business temporarily closes.
