News Consumer Group Says Vizzy Illegally Touting Health Claims with Addition of Vitamin C
The TTB has long prohibited any sort of health claim on alcohol packaging or advertising. The Center for Science in the Public Interest and Consumer Federation of America have submitted a letter to the Food and Drug Administration requesting that they bring enforcement action against Molson Coors for illegally misleading consumers with its Vizzy Hard Seltzer labeling and advertising campaign.

News SBA Grant Applications for Restaurant Revitalization Fund Accepted Beginning May 3
The U.S. Small Business Administration has announced that online application for the $28.6 billion Restaurant Revitalization Fund will be accepted beginning on Monday, May 3, at 12:00pm (EDT). The online application will remain open until funds are exhausted.

News Cans Capture 74% of All Beer Sold in 2020
Domestic beer in cans grew 11.4% to 12.7 million barrels in 2020, according to Beer Marketer’s Insights. Cans now make up 74% of total volume share, up from 58 share 10 years ago. Not surprisingly in the pandemic year, draft fell by 7.9 million barrels and bottles dropped almost 3.6 million barrels.

News Southern Glazer to Distribute Cannabis Drink from Canopy
Canopy Growth Corporation has signed up Southern Glazers as their wholesaler for their CBD-infused beverage line, Qautreau. The move is another indication that the alcohol distribution tier is willing and ready to add cannabis-related beverages to their portfolios.

News Boston Beer Has Another Big Quarter – Volume Up 60%
The Boston Beer Company continues to reap the success of being one of the first to dive deep into the hard seltzer category with their hugely successful Truly brand. The company reported first quarter 2021 net revenue of $545.1 million, an increase of $214.5 million or 64.9% from the same period last year, mainly due to an increase in shipments of 60.1%. Net income for the first quarter was $65.6 million, an increase of $47.3 million or 259.6% from the same period last year.

News A Third of Craft Brewers Now Make Non-Beer Beverage
One third of all craft brewers in the US now make some variety of alternative beer beverage, according to Bart Watson, economist with the Brewers Association. The statistic points to the growing popularity of hard seltzers, hard kombucha, flavored malt beverages and other non-beer products.

News On-Premise Opening Continues with Bars Back Open in All States
Bars are now allowed to be opened in all 50 states across the country according to the latest Nielsen CGA survey report. 30% of the states are fully open with no restrictions and 66% of the states have capacity limits. 4% of the states, including California, allow only outdoor service.

News New Realm Brewing to Open Fourth Location in South Carolina
New Realm Brewing Co. has announced it will open its fourth location, a 11,000 square-foot facility on Daniel Island in Charleston, S.C. The new location will have on-site brewing, a restaurant, outdoor patio space and a live music venue.

News NBWA Beer Purchasers’ Index for March 2021 Shows Slow But Continued Growth
The National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) released the Beer Purchasers’ Index (BPI) for March 2021. The trend over the past couple of months still shows a continued, albeit slow, return to the long-running average total BPI of 57.

News Pandemic Hasn’t Slowed Investment Interest in Craft Brewing Industry
Although the Brewer’s Association announced this week that craft beer sales dropped for the first time ever in 2020 with a 9% decrease in volume, an article in the Commercial Observer says that the craft brewing industry continues to be a desirable investment.

News Brewer Migration – Moving from ‘Brewing Company’ to ‘Beverage Company’

Almost without doubt, the biggest evolution in the brewing industry over the last 40 years has been the rapid growth and popularity in alternative beer brands. Lead by hard seltzers but also joined by hard teas, kombuchas, FMB’s and others, more brewers are following in the footsteps of Boston Beer Company and the global brewers by shedding their “brewery” hat and becoming a “beverage company.”
