Brewing will return to Ohio with purchase of old brewery building
Thirsty Dog Brewing, which has had its beers brewed under contract, is returning to brew again in Akron, Ohio.
Thirsty Dog was born in 1997 with the opening of a brew pub in the Akron area. A second brew pub later opened, but both were closed by 2005. .
Since 2003, Thirsty Dog has been brewing its packaged beer under at the Frederick Brewing Co. in Maryland. But that brewery was purchased last year by Flying Dog and contracts there are squeezed for brewing time..
Owner John Najeway is opening the new brewery in a brick building that once housed the Burkhardt Brewing Co. which operated in Akron from the 1860s until it closed in 1964. The brewing buildings have mostly sat vacant since.
