11am – Staff Training

A successful training program requires investment, and investing in your team is one of the best things you can do to better your brewery. The more educated your team, the better representatives they will be for your brand – and the more beer they’ll be able to sell. Having this is valuable no matter where a person works in your company, and having educational systems in place can help bridge the frequent disconnect between departments. In this conversation we will discuss how our panelists have facilitated training that educates, motivates, and results in a more successful brewery.

Panelists: Chema Mora (Cicerone Certification Program), Erik Coleman (Beer By Coleman), Josh Lindsay (Karbach Brewing Company), Katie Nierling (Ska Street Brewstillery), Larry Winans (Jackass Brewing Company)

Moderator: Andrew Coplon (Craft Beer Professionals/Secret Hopper)

1pm – The Ups and Downs of Selling Beer in a Pandemic

Selling beer in the retail market has not been an easy task over the past 20 months. At a time when business was just awful for everyone in our industry, brewery sales reps were tasked with maintaining buyer relationships, communicating remotely with accounts, pivoting traditional in person brand promotions, and somehow amongst all of this, tending to their own mental health. Join us for an in depth discussion about the challenges that those on the sales front face in a pandemic-era beer market, what companies are doing to assist with mental health issues, creative solutions for increasing retail sales, innovative ways to connect with buyers, and new marketing techniques adapted for our new marketplace.

Panelists: Eric Butler (Wolf’s Ridge Brewing), Jordyn Frasier-Hill (Lakewood Brewing), Laura Lodge (StartABrewery.com), Mary Bowen (Lakewood Brewing), Ted Risk (Wibby Brewing)

Moderator: Julie Rhodes (Not Your Hobby Marketing Solutions)

3pm – Managing Yeast: A Discussion on the Methodology for Harvesting and Re-using Yeast, No Matter the Scale

When is the optimal time to harvest yeast from a live fermentation? Which strains perform the best over multiple batches? How can a small brewery replicate the same results as a large one? Three breweries will share their methodology, timing, and other considerations when working with yeast. From pitch to harvest to re-pitch to doing it all over again, we’ll dive into all the details we can in under 60 minutes.

Panelists: Chris Basso (Newburgh Brewing), Chris Creech (The Glass Jug Beer Lab), Erik Fowler (White Labs), Peter-John Ferrebee (Rare Form Brewing Company)

Moderator: Andy Morrison (Precision Fermentation)

5pm – Women Conquering Craft Beer

This year saw an amplified and necessary dialogue on the ongoing sexism with Craft Beer. While the industry has a long way to go to becoming inclusive, equitable, and safe for all, we want to use this time to showcase some amazing women conquering their respective areas of the industry. You’ll hear stories from panelists that are involved in a variety of roles and functions across craft – how they first got into the industry, how they’ve navigated (and thrived) a male dominated industry, where they see the industry going, and more.

Panelists: Ashley Picerno (Deschutes Brewery), Audra Gaiziunas (Brewed For Her Ledger), Jen Blair (Under the Jenfluence), Nicole Mandela (AB Brewers Collective), Sarah Perez (Denali Brewing Company/Lifting Lucy/Pink Boots Society)

Moderator: Colleen Quinn (Second Sip Beverage Consulting)

7pm – Brand Consistency: One Look to Rule Them All

This panel will discuss how to create and maintain a brand identity that is reflective of your brewery and culture. The focus will be on how the panelists have taken steps to maintain that identity across various packaging, point of sale, and promotional materials. We will also dive into how this identity is presented internally.

Panelists: Aaron Gore (Community Brewing Ventures), Elliot Seidler (Civic Brewing Company), Patrick Delves (Seismic Brewing Company)

Moderator: Ben Weston (Hoptown Handles/SeaThirst Creative)

11am – Craft Beer in 10 Years

If beer was first discovered today, what would it be made with? What would it look like? How would it smell? How about those tasting notes? Innovation is arguably the secret ingredient for any brewery, but in a constantly changing industry, what would beer be like if we went to sleep and woke up in 2031? In this conversation we hear from five leading voices to discuss the expectations, evolution, and predictions on a beverage that plays a leading role in our lives.

Panelists: Jeff Alworth (Beervana), Jeremy Storton (Good Beer Matters), John Holl (Beer Edge; Drink Beer, Think Beer), Julia Herz (American Homebrewers Association), Michael Uhrich (Seventh Point Analytic)

Moderator: Andrew Coplon (Craft Beer Professionals/Secret Hopper)

1pm – Taproom Technology

A more efficient taproom is a more profitable taproom. It seems like just yesterday we were learning about QR codes, app-based ordering, and other pandemic-inspired innovations. These technologies, if used correctly, are designed to better the dining experience for both guests and staff alike. In this conversation, we will discuss the value of technology in maximizing the taproom experience, strategies for success, and steps you can take to see results.

Panelists: Austin Gibson (BarTrack), Chad Bratt (Jagged Mountain Brewery), Kindsey Bernard (Hi-Wire Brewing), Loren Bendele (Arryved POS)

Moderator: Andrew Coplon (Craft Beer Professionals/Secret Hopper)

3pm – It’s All DTC to Me? Direct-to-Consumer Delivery vs. Shipping

With multiple factors increasing beer drinkers’ interest in receiving their favorite beverage directly to their homes, even the most savvy brewers can misunderstand the difference between delivery and shipping. And it’s more than a semantic distinction, as delivery and shipping bring different operational and compliance considerations. This panel will discuss these differences and their implications for craft brewers engaging in direct-to-consumer delivery and/or shipping. (Hint: one channel operates through the three-tier system, the other does not, and the considerations are quite distinct!)

Panelists: Bob Montgomery (Hill Farmstead Brewery), John Kelley (Craftpeak), Marc Sorini (Brewers Association)

Moderator: Alex Koral (Sovos ShipCompliant)

5pm – Life as a Startup Brewery During a Pandemic

Join us as we talk to brewers about how they navigated opening their breweries during the pandemic. Listen to each of their experiences; lessons learned and success achieved.

Panelists: Amelia Pillow (Shipping Port Brewing), Andy Shaw (Brewery 26), John Bieranoski (Allusion Brewing)

Moderators: Don Marcil and Mike Paladino (Stout Tanks and Kettles)

7pm – Opening Multiple Taprooms

Is craft beer at a saturation point? Our four panelists certainly didn’t think so when they decided to add another location to their repertoire. To successfully grow, it is necessary to have a well thought out plan and measures in place to maintain the same high level of quality and experience as you continue to grow. In this conversation, we will discuss aspects to consider when planning an expansion, challenges you may face, and strategies for success while growing via the taproom model.

Panelists: David Ringler (Cedar Springs Brewing Company), John Haggerty (Warped Wing Brewing Company), Kary Shumway (Craft Brewery FInancial Training.com), Sean O’Keefe (Pontoon Brewing),

Moderator: Andrew Coplon (Craft Beer Professionals/Secret Hopper)
