Briess Signs Up Country Malt

March 3, 2011

Briess Malt & Ingredients Co. has named The Country Malt Group as a new, authorized distributor of its entire line of brewing ingredients.

“We’re excited about this partnership and what it means to the American craft brewing industry,” stated Briess Vice President of Sales & Marketing Robert O’Connell. “In a relatively short period of time, The Country Malt Group has grown into a respected and trusted full service distributor by staying focused on the customer’s needs.

“That makes them an excellent fit with our business model and our mission which has been, and remains, to provide quality products and superior service to the craft brewing industry,” O’Connell continued.

The Country Malt Group, headquartered in Champlain, NY, operates six distribution warehouses in the United States with locations in Champlain, NY, Vancouver, WA, Hayward, CA, Aurora, CO, South Holland, IL, and Hickory, NC.

Pretty interesting. I have not brewed with Breiss malts in a good long while but it would explain why the NCM rep sent me the Breiss catalog along with their 2011 prices coming out of Hickory. Love NCM though and planning on making them our grain and hop supplier when we get up and running in the fall of 2011. Will have to check some of the Breiss malts too.

Why would they turn their backs on bsg, I love briess and their products, but the customer support from brewers supply means I’ll be exploring crisp, simpsons and wyermann crystal malt options

We get great service from both suppliers. NCM gets our orders to us quicker, but they’re alot closer. My only issue with BSG is their shippers; seems like its always a day later than quoted, which may be do to the added distance, but I know not to plan a brew day if I need malt till the day after they say it will arrive.

I’ve built our beer recipes around BSG’s excellent malt selection. The two maltsters I feel our beers can’t do without are Briess and Weyermann. Now I’m stuck having to order from multiple suppliers…. if anyone gets Briess and Weyermann together at the same supplier again, I’ll be looking closely at them as a primary malt supplier.

Whoever said that BSG wouldn’t be selling Briess products anymore. All Briess announced was that, CMG would be another authorized distributor. BSG will still have all the Briess products, they also carry Weyermann products too.I
buy from both places, and customer service is great at both places. But my delivery dates are more on time with BSG. It might be my location in the Upper Peninsula, though. Hope this helps!! Cheers!!!

BSG’s site doesn’t mention Breiss at all, I may have misunderstood it, but it sounded like they were indicating they were going exclusive. Maybe not?

If you go to the BSG site http://www.brewerssupplygroup.com/, they mention their domestic
malts as Rahr and Briess in the 2nd paragraph. Also if you check out this link
http://http://www.brewingwithbriess.com/Orderinfo/WhereBuyBriess.htm, you will see that BSG are still listed as authorized distributors. I just
ordered Briess from BSG in MN. yesterday, and they never mentioned anything
about it. Let’s hope I am wrong. Cheers!!!

Who said is Ian Ward. Here is the letter I received from BSG:

    Dear Customer

    Distribution of Briess Products

We have been informed by Briess Industries that Brewers Supply Group will no longer be an authorized Briess distributor effective March 23rd, 2011. We feel this is an unfortunate decision, since we understand it may cause some inconvenience to you.

We will continue to offer Briess products until the above date and then until our stocks are depleted.

We realize that some of your beers may have been designed using Briess malts. However, as you are aware, BSG offers a very wide variety of malts and we feel confident we can easily find substitutes that meet your needs and that offer better quality and value. The enclosed list of suggested replacements has been assembled with the help of many of our customers, in conjunction with BSG staff brewmasters, through years of experience and trials. Please take a look and consider what might work for your beers, and please do not hesitate to call or email your local BSG sales representative with any questions or concerns.

Also attached is an updated Brewers Resource Guide. We have added some very exciting products including Patagonia Malt, TCHO Cacao nibs, Varietal Specific Hop Extracts, and Filtration Products. Please contact us for an updated price list.

We have enjoyed working with Briess over the years and wish them well in their endeavors.

From everyone at Brewers Supply Group, we thank you for your loyalty and look forward to continuing to be of service.

    Yours sincerely

    Ian L Ward
    President
    Brewers Supply Group

That seems pretty clear to me.
