Stone Expansion Keeps On Rolling

Stone Brewing Co. has finished its move into its new and larger brewery, but the work is far from over. While the brewery and gift shop are open, the restaurant and beer garden are still months from completion.

Brewing in the new brewery began at the very end of last year. By the end of this month, Stone’s capacity will reach a maximum of 60,000 barrels a year at the 58,000-square-foot brewery. Last year, Stone brewed 36,400 barrels. Eventually, the brewery will have a capacity of 200,000 barrels.

The restaurant and beer garden, with 32 beers on tap, are to open in about three months.

Meanwhile, Stone’s old brewery has a new owner: Pizza Port. The Solana Beach-based group of three brewpubs is using the site to increase production of its own beers. While the brewpub locations will continue to brew beer for on-site consumption, the package plant will allow the company to begin distribution into the local retail market. Stone Brewing will provide distribution through the company’s wholesale operation.
