News ‘I am a Craft Brewer’

Craft beer video previews at CBC

Greg Koch, co-founder of Stone Brewing Co. put together a rousing and inspirational video with around 35 different craft brewers from around the country for his keynote address at the Craft Brewers Conference which took place last week in Boston, Mass.

The video ends with a toast to craft beer, so you may want to get a beer ready before you watch it. Enjoy.

It was a great moment. I seriously got chills near the end. I encourage everone to paste a link to the video on your website, and get everyone you know to see it.

The video mentions that craft brewers don’t use corn. I don’t use corn, but if I did would that make me officially not a craft brewer? I’ve never seen an “official” definition. On the BA site I can see a reference to a craft brewer being one who uses malted grains. But this would also exclude those who use adjuncts. This is all fine with me since I brew my lagers via the Reinheitsgebot. I was just surprised to see that statement.

Hell, I was in the video and I have used both corn and rice in craft beer…

  • lhall

    says:

Yeah, that was one part of the video that I didn’t like. There is nothing wrong with corn or rice, they are just another grain in our portfolio. We’re using them for the flavor they can give – not to make a beer more cheaply.

I once made a Prohibition Pils w/ 30% corn– was a great beer!! And my resume still says Craftbrewer. Praise the Maize!

Craft Brewers typically use 2-Row Barley (right?) and Mega Macro Big Brothers use 6-Row. Maybe that would ba a better distinction as even i have use some flaked rice in one of my seasonals. I remember A-B bragging about using 2-Row in thier Bud Select. I find it funny when big boys try to emulate us?
