Boulevard Brewing fires up new IT system to run its expanded brewery

Six years ago Boulevard Brewing Company did a major $25 million upgrade, expanding to a state-of-the-art 150 barrel brewhouse. Their product line was expanded to 26 styles.

But with the new system and expanded product line, the company initially kept its old IT system – and with it the nightmares of managing the new brewhouse through power outages, mechanical problems and other issues. Even a two minute power outage would shut down the computers and send a batch of beer to the drain.

Then came Tony Lux, the Purveyor of Technology. Tony wrote a nice article on how he now runs a the brewery from his iPhone.

    That’s awesome.

You know my brewery is controlled with an iPhone as well…

…The alarm goes off, I get my sorry ass out of bed and grab the mash paddle… 😎

    Cheers,

Unless Apple whiffs an update and your alarm doesn’t go off at all.

I have an “Android” working for me in the brewery, lazy bastard just checks his email and makes phone calls all day

-though i’d prefer a flock of oompa loompa’s, better yet a bucket of programable nanites (like tiny little robotic scrubbing bubbles:)…. hmmm, one can dream.

You can do a lot of things on your ‘smart’ phone.

    Contract for an assassination.

    Donate money to shady organizations.

    Buy illicit substances.

View some pretty abhorrent visual matter.

Let the world know when you pass gas.

Keep abreast of new techniques in acupuncture.

Start a petition to save the spent yeast.

Running a brewery on one is not something I would suggest.

    Russ, I hope you’re listenin’

Awesome. We’re working on a variety of smartphone apps to help. One that I can actually release info on is our fermentation monitor:

(It is turned off right now, since we don’t have a brew going. It’ll be on again Monday)

It plugs into a ~$100 device with three probes you put into the thermowells on your conical, then logs the temperature every 1s – 5m (configurable) and sends it to your phone, live. It also text messages you if the temperature goes outside a preset limit. Pretty fun.

We’re working on a few others too.

(P.S. I am trying to gauge interest in devices like these for both homebrewers and microbrewers. If you’d like to be on the updates list, message me)
