Old Coors plant may be purchased by Yuengling to fuel growth
D.G. Yuengling & Son Inc. is close to buying the former Coors plant in Memphis from the Hardy Bottling Co.
Yuengling has signed a letter of intent to buy the Memphis 1.3 million square foot facility according to an article in the Wall Street Jounal. It would be the fifth owner of the brewing plant since it opened in the 1970’s The brewery was opened in 1971 by the Jos. Schlitz Brewing Co. It changed hands in 1982, when Stroh Brewery Inc. acquired Schlitz. In 1990, as struggling Stroh sought to shed assets, Coors bought the Memphis plant, initially for repackaging and distributing its beer.
The purchase would give the company a fourth brewing plant and help it grow distribution beyond its existing 13 states in the eastern U.S, the newspaper reports.
Yuengling, which sells now in 13 states, has been expanding its distribution footprint rapidly and has shown strong growth in both longtime markets and in new markets.
