North Carolina’s older craft brewery, The Weeping Radish, has sold to Sumit Gupta, CEO of a realty and construction company.
Uli and Eileen Bennewitz, founders of the craft brewery that was a first in North Carolina, are well known in the industry and are credited with successfully campaigning for North Carolina law to be changed to allow craft breweries to sell their beer on site.
“After 35 years at the Weeping Radish, Eileen and I are passing the baton,” wrote Uli Bennewitz on the brewery’s Facebook page. “For over three decades we have pushed the envelope on what was possible for a small business. From changing the law allowing brew pubs in North Carolina, building the first brewery and butchery, using exclusively sustainable local pork in our restaurant, to growing barely for our beer on our own farm, this has been a dynamic chapter in our lives that we will look back on with great pride.”
Weeping Radish opened in 1986, at which time there were fewer than 100 breweries in the country.
