News Modern Times to Close Four Locations

Modern Times Beer of San Diego announced today in a company blog post that they will be closing four of their seven satellite locations. The company will be closing their Portland, Oakland, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles tap rooms while their two San Diego locations (North Park and Ensenada) and Anaheim locations will remain open. Their production brewery and tap room located in Point Loma, San Diego will also remain open.

The company said that financial strain from the pandemic and “global declines in the craft beer industry” were the reason for the closures.

“It is a surreal and painful turn of events for us, and we realize that the suddenness of it puts many people we care about in very difficult positions. We wish that there were another way to resolve the financial issues we now face, but we have been put in a position—by the pandemic and global declines in the craft beer industry—from which this tremendously difficult path is the only way forward for us,” the company said.

Modern Times named Jennifer Briggs as CEO just last month to replace the company’s former CEO Jacob McKean who stepped down in May of last year he was named in #MeToo-like social media posts about toxic work environments for women in the craft beer industry.

“As new leadership has stepped up and taken the helm over the last few weeks, it became clear that the financial state of the company that we are now tasked with directing is not just unsustainable, but in immediate and unavoidable peril,” the statement said.
