News Maui Brewing Goes 100% Off-Grid

Maui Brewing Company disconnected from the power grid. Not like in northern California where last week’s temporary power shut off was due to extreme fire danger, but by choice.

The Maui Brewing production plant in Kihei, Maui, Hawaii now gets 100 percent of their power from self-sustaining, off-grid sources. The 85,000 square foot brewery is plastered with solar panels and 80% of the brewery power comes from solar.

Part of the allure is predictability. “When I can accurately predict my energy costs in perpetuity, and you are subject to the rise and fall of oil and how that impacts your energy costs, I have a more predictable, stable cash flow which gives my team and myself a much more stable foundation to build on for the future,” Maui Brewing founder and owner told CraftBeer.com. “I think it’s beyond just your savings today.”

Hawaii’s state legislature has committed to powering the state using 100 percent renewable energy by 2045. Maui Brewing Company seems to be ahead of the curve.
