Former head brewer at North Coast Brewing losses battle with cancer

Former head brewer at North Coast Brewing Company in Ft. Bragg, California Fred Hahn, has passed away after a long battle with cancer.

He was 64.

Hahn had retired from a military career and joined North Coast when the brewery was still just a brewpub back in 1989. He had no brewing experience, but “his interest in what we were doing got the better of him and, before we knew it, Fred was involved in every facet of the brewing process,” said North Coast Brewing founder and president, Mark Reudrich in a statement to the industry.

When Production was moved to a new and larger facility across the street in 1994, Hahn was in charge of production and oversaw growth from 1,200 bbls a year to nearly 20,000 by the time he retired in 2004. “Fred’s energy, his enthusiasm for his work and his commitment to North Coast Brewing and his co-workers, is the stuff of legend. We will miss him and his never-failing smile,” said Reudrich.
