New York Assembly member, Brooklyn Democrat Harvey Epstein, has proposed doubling the states excise tax on beer to increase the state’s revenues from about $45 million to $96 million per year.
New York’s current state excise tax on beer is $0.14 per gallon, which ranks 39th in the United States. The national average is $0.30 per gallon with Tennessee being the highest at $1.29 per gallon.
The bill has a sponsor on the Senate side, but craft beer-friendly Gov. Andrew Cuomo has not stated a position. The state is facing a projected $6 billion budget deficit in the upcoming year.
