News Illinois Proposes 21% Hike in Beer Taxes

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker is said to be considering a 21% tax hike on beer, wine and spirits that would raise $140 million in state revenue.

Retailer, small brewers and others are sounding the alarm to oppose the tax hike. According to a statement by Tanya Triche Dawood of the Illinois Merchant Association on WGN-TV, “50% of the cost of beer is attributed to a wide array of taxes.”

The tax increase is part of a larger plan to raise $40 billion in state revenue.
