L.A. Times Does Serious Piece on Beer and Food Pairing

The Los Angeles Times has a feature story in last weeks Food section titled “Beer Gets Invited to Serious Tables” which describes beer as a “superb accompaniment to serious food.” In a huge market that has never fully embraced specialty imports or domestic craft, publicity such as this is rare. The article covers the exceptional beer dinners that the LAX Four Points Sheraton’s Palm Grill has been promoting for some time now, and also mentions Garrett Oliver’s new book “The Brewmaster’s Table.”

The L.A. area seems far behind just about any other metropolitan markets in its appreciation of good beer. Although a number of brewpubs have thrived in the area, package sales of specialty beer has always been far below most other markets per capita. The article has some telling comments in that regard such as; “Groundbreaking as it sounds, the carefully considered pairing of beers with cuisine is a centuries-old practice….” Groundbreaking? I don’t think so.
