News Registration Opens June 11 for ‘Reimagined’ 2024 GABF as BA Rolls Out Big Changes

Registration for the 2024 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) competition opens Tuesday, June 11 and runs through July 12, or until capacity is reached. Big changes are coming to this year as the Brewers Association (BA) gives the annual event a “totally reimagined” design.

According to a column in the New Brewer magazine by Ann Obenchain, vice president, marketing and communications for the BA, the Saturday evening session will be eliminated this year allowing industry members to roam freely on Saturday night.

“The elimination of the Saturday evening session allows brewers to reduce their travel costs and participate in in-market collaborations on Saturday night,” said Obenchain.

Another big change for this year’s event is that breweries will be allowed to pour RTD cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages and craft spirits rather than just beer, as in the past.

The BA will also introduce a revamped floor plan with breweries being grouped by “themed area” on the convention center floor. And for the first time, cider makers will be allowed to compete in the competition. “This year, we are pleased to invite the more than 1,300 commercial cider producers to compete for medals in the inaugural cider categories,” the BA said. There will be five new cider categories: Tannic Cider (Cat. 201), No/Low-Tannin Cider (Cat. 202), Fruited or Botanical Cider (Cat. 203), Experimental or Barrel-Aged Cider (Cat. 204), and Single Varietal Cider (Cat. 205).

Produced by the BA, the GABF is the nation’s largest professional beer competition. In 2023, 9,298 entries spanning 99 beer categories across 175 styles were judged, and 263 breweries were awarded 303 medals.

The 2024 GABF takes place Oct. 10 -12 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver with the awards ceremony being held at the Bellco Theatre on Saturday, Oct. 12. The ceremony will be livestreamed on The Brewing Network.
