Glen Falconer Foundation to Provide Brewing Scholarship

The Glen Hay Falconer Foundation Brewing Scholarship, formed and directed by Glen’s family, is offering a full-scholarship to the November 2004 Siebel Institute’s Concise Course in Brewing Technology. The brewing scholarship is open to professional brewers and home brewers entering the brewing industry. This year, the scholarship is limited to candidates from the Pacific NW and Northern California regions, but the family has plans to expand the scholarship in future years. The long-term vision is to grant multiple scholarships annually, to offer grants to senior-level brewers for specialty brewing courses, and to expand the geographic scope to embrace qualified candidates from all regions of the United States. Application can be obtained at www.siebelinstitute.com and must be received no later than April 20, 2004. The selection committee is comprised of brewers and professionals related to the brewing industry.

The Glen Hay Falconer Foundation was created to commemorate and celebrate the life, interests, and good works of a well-loved and leading Northwest brewer. Currently, the Foundation raises the majority of its funds from the annual Sasquatch Brew Fest. The 2004 Sasquatch Brew Fest will be held June 5 in Eugene, Oregon. For more information on the festival visit www.sasquatchbrewfest.org.

The Foundation also encourages individual contributions and donations from businesses and organizations in order to expand the number and scope of grants awarded each year. Glen’s family is currently matching 50% of the first $10,000 in individual cash contributions. The Foundation is finalizing its non-profit status, which will allow contributions to be tax deductible. While supporting the craft brewing industry is the cornerstone of the grants, the Foundation will continue to make contributions to organizations that represent Glen’s broad interests. For more information on the Foundation or how to become involved in realizing its goals, the foundation can be contacted at glensbrew@yahoo.com.

Glen Falconer began his brewing career as an avid home brewer and dedicated member of the Cascade Brewers Society, a clan of skilled home brewers based in the Eugene/Springfield, Oregon area. As a professional brewer, Glen continued to support the craft of home brewing by providing access to brewing ingredients, procedures and unique beer recipes. In 1990, Glen followed his dream and pursued a professional brewing career, beginning at Steelhead Brewery in Eugene. Glen completed the Siebel Concise Course in Brewing Technology in 1994. He then refined his skills at Rogue Ales in Newport, Oregon, working side-by-side with his close friend and mentor John Maier. In 1996, Glen became head brewer at the Wild Duck Brewery in Eugene, providing six regular beers on tap as well as a wide variety of specialty ales and lagers each season. Glen continued as head brewer at the Wild Duck until his untimely death in 2002. The memorial service held at the Wild Duck to honor Glen attracted hundreds of brewers and friends from all over the country, amazing even his close friends and family at the amount of people his life touched and affected, all of whom were willing to travel vast distances at short notice to pay tribute to such a singular individual. While Glen won numerous professional craft brewing prizes and accolades, perhaps his finest accomplishment was the back-to-back Gold Medals received posthumously for his Auld Gnarly Head Barley Wine at the 2002 and 2003 Great American Beer Festival.
