News NBWA’s New Chair Peter Heimark Lays Out Challenges Ahead for Nations Beer Distributors

The National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) concluded its 84th Annual Convention and Trade Show in Las Vegas by announcing that Peter Heimark would assume the role as the organization’s new Chairman of the Board.

“Peter’s two decades of experience serving the beer distribution industry in Southern California will be especially valuable as he helps lead this industry forward over the next year,” said Craig Purser, President and CEO of NBWA.

Peter reiterated that the NBWA would evolve going forward as a “beverage” association rather than just focusing on beer. “Now is a critical moment for America’s beer and beverage distributors,” Peter said. “Yes, America’s beer AND beverage distributors.” A few years ago, that may have felt out of place for our industry, but now, with the expansion of seltzers, RTD’s, new brands and non-alcoholic beverages – both large and craft – beer and beverage distributors makes perfect sense.”

Peter made clear the challenges ahead for the middle tier. “The expansion of e-commerce, the expansion of large chain retailers, efforts to allow direct-to-consumer shipping, including alcohol through the mail, as well as challenges from brewers large and small, are just a few of the issues facing our industry,” he said.

Peter did not mention the NBWA’s displeasure with the Brewers Association as NBWA President and CEO Craig Purser did in opening remarks on Sunday.
