News NBWA June Beer Purchasers’ Index Reaches All-Time High

The National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) released the Beer Purchasers’ Index (BPI) for June 2020. The index surveys beer distributors’ purchases across different segments and compares them to previous years.

The total BPI for June 2020 was notable since it reached an all-time high mark of 81, significantly above last year’s reading of 48 in June 2019. Ahead of a July 4th load-in to retail and reported shortages for some popular packages, the “at-risk inventory” index for total beer (inventory at risk of going out of code in the next 30 days) fell to an all-time low reading of 27 in June 2020 from 49 in June 2019.

Regarding these kind of reports, you have to keep things in context. While it’s good for the industry, you have to keep in mind that there was basically no demand for 2-3 months due to the COVID-19 closures/restrictions. Overall, beer consumption will be down for the year.
