News Sharp Drop in Craft Beer Sales – Large Number of Closings Likely

A recent Brewers Association survey of craft brewery members indicate both a big drop in craft beer sales and the increasing likelihood of hundreds if not thousands of brewery closings over the coming months due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Bart Watson, economist with the BA, in reviewing the results of the survey stated that a “majority of breweries do not think their business can last three months given current conditions, suggesting thousands of closings.”

Onsite sales at craft breweries was down an average of 66% while off-site sales of kegs was down an average of 91%. While distributed bottles and cans fared well with increased sales at grocery stores, the estimated total decline in craft beer sales overall was -29%.
