No surprise. Looking to diversify as their core brands continue a long and steady decline, Anheuser Busch has now made its first foray into spirits by acquiring Cutwater Spirits in San Diego. AB has made other recent acquisitions to expand beyond beer including the cannabis industry and buying the consumer website Rate Beer.
If the name Cutwater sounds familiar, it’s because of its craft beer/Big Beer history. The original founders of Ballast Point Brewing in San Diego started Cutwater after Constellation Brands acquired Ballast Point for $1 billion dollars in 2015.
Cutwater is not your average “craft distiller.” They have developed a new era of ready-to-drink canned cocktails by blending quality spirits with “mixers” and other ingredients – in a can.
