News Austrian Trappist Brewery Abbey of Engelszell to Close

Trappist Ale beer production will come to an end in Austria as the last four monks staying at the abbey of Engelszell will soon leave the premises. The Trappist brewery is the only one in Austria and the closure will leave just nine Trappist breweries remaining in the world.

The production of beer at the site is not definitively over but the beer will lose its Authentic Trappist Product (ATP) logo, which states that a Trappist beer must be brewed within an abbey of the order and under the supervision of the monks.

With the end of Engelszell Trappist beer, it will leave five Trappist breweries in Belgian (Chimay, Orval, Rochefort, Westmalle and Westvleteren), La Trappe and Zundert in the Netherlands, Tynt Meadow in England and Tre Fontane in Italy.

The abbey was founded in 1293 by Bernhard of Prambach, Bishop of Passau, as a Cistercian monastery. A brewing operation had been launched there in 2012 in collaboration with Peter Krammer, who runs the family brewery Hofstetten, located in Sankt Martin, some 30 kilometres from the abbey.
