Head Brewer - Chicago, IL
The Last Bay Beer Company, from the quaint trading post town of Chicago, IL, is seeking a Head Brewer.
OVERVIEW
Last Bay Beer Company brews beers to fortify one against the rigors of walking the dog, a Netflix night, or an evening with the in-laws; we brew “go-to” beers. And Last Bay builds the coolest, most convenient, growler-only nanopubs on earth.
As Head Brewer, you are not new to professional brewing; you’ve had a couple years of experience learning about and producing exceptional examples of timeless (and sometimes made-up) beer styles, either at a brewpub or microbrewery. You enrich people’s lives through the production of the world’s most diverse social accelerant and taste treat – craft brewed beer. You inspire customers by brewing beers that do more than satisfy thirst – they open minds to the artistry of a fantastic beer and inspire people to join us on this misadventure.
As you know, the nature of the Head Brewer’s work is multifaceted. The stimulating aspects includes: cooking (mash and kettle), working with machines and equipment, yeast wrangling, organizing and uniting teams, local travel, and the knowledge that people love you for the products and experiences that you provide.
Last Bay offers a competitive salary and benefits, the opportunity to live in an awesome city, and a place for a motivated person to build something great.
The ideal candidate understands customers’ tastes and produces world-class beers with them in mind. If you’ve got strong technical brewing skills and a record of leadership and innovation, we want you.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Requirements:
2+ years of brewing experience in a brewpub or production brewery
1+ years of supervisory experience
Brewed many styles of craft ales and have created recipes of your own
Direct knowledge of all phases of the production process: from grain inspection to CIP to kegging
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
On the spot decision making skills
The ability and desire to operate with a great deal of autonomy and no hand-holding
The ability to meet deadlines or work more than 40 hours a week, as needed
Driver's license and a willingness to travel locally
Preferred, but not required:
Formal brewing education
Degree in a natural science field
Experience with Brewery Alternating Proprietorships
