A quick search revealed no threads on this odd question.

We take measurements during runoff to determine volume in our kettle.
We have been turning on the burner once we get above our thermowell and kiln jackets to get a head start on boiling.
We recorded depths and marked them on the stick with cold liquor.

Would cold liquor and 195 F liquor, due to expansion be significantly different in depth measurements?

Cast out volume to fermenter will be 0.96 volume of your heated kettle volume.
How's the sushi?

I use 4% as a figure for thermal expansion volume.

Seem to work for me.

Your mileage may vary.

4% volume lost is a standard one and it`s pretty correct for most of the brewers. If you want be more precise, 4% of volume difference is perfect value if the hot wort is 98 C and you cool it down to 20 C. If you brew bottom fermented beers and cool the wort to ~6-8 C, the difference will be a little bit bigger.
