I have an interest in trying a beer that i would start fermenting with an ale yeast and then i would crash fermentation and add a lager yeast to that. what potential problems could this cause?? just morbid curiosity...

Doug Odell has done this. Contact him at Odell's for more info. mk

Re-pitching would seem to be a problem. How about making two fermentations and blending after they are done?

I had a stuck ale fermentation this winter that I re-pitched with a strong lager strain to finish and it worked great. It was a brown ale and I am very happy with the results even if unintended!:)

what is your idea for doing this though? care to elaborate?

There are ale strains that gives good lager like profiles, and there are also lager yeast that gives more fruity tones... it may save you a lot of trouble than to "double ferment" it.

They do often use lager yeast to bottle condition hefeweizen in Germany, so they can do it cold.
