Crowning of the Alpha King
Sept 7, 2005 - It's time once again for the Alpha King Challenge, held every year in conjunction with Great American Beer Festival and co-sponsored by Hopunion LLC, Brewing News & Three Floyds Brewing Co.
The AK Challenge is a contest that chooses the best-tasting and best-balanced amongst a field of beers that are approximately 60 IBUs or higher. A panel of judges including brewers and beer writers chooses the top three entries in a blind judging.
The only guidelines/rules are:
The informal competition only requires that the entries be sold commercially by a licensed brewery, no barleywines are allowed, 60 IBUs or greater recommended and an entry form must be submitted for each entry.
Entries must be shipped to Boulder to arrive Wed - Fri., Sept. 20-22, with an entry form filled out. The Alpha King Challenge judging takes place Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, 1-3 pm at the Falling Rock Tap House in Denver.
Brewers are welcome to attend the judging and taste some of the beers after the judging is completed. The awards ceremony will take place at 3:00 pm.
This year's defending champion beer is Torry Pines IPA from Oggi's Pizza and Brewing Co. in Vista, California.
